Looking for a way to introduce engineering and engineering design to first grade students using a picture book.

Rosie Revere, Engineer is a delightful picture book by Andrea Beaty, with illustrations by David Roberts.  In the story, young Rosie Revere creates great inventions in her room at night, but doesn't want to feel foolish in front of others, so she hides them under her bed.  She eventually learns that failure isn't something to fear - it's something to celebrate.

I would like to use this picture book as a springboard to introduce engineering and engineering design to young students.

Does anyone have advice for how I can get started?
