Florentia has experience teaching STEM, science, math, and health at various K-12 levels over two decades. She began her science and math teaching career as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana, Southern Africa. Florentia eventually returned to the U.S. and taught in Prince George’s County Public Schools, the school system from which she graduated. She also taught at Edmund Burke College Preparatory School and Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science. Florentia has held numerous leadership roles during her teaching career. In Botswana, she started three science departments anew and served as the Head of Department in those schools. She then trained new incoming U. S. Peace Corps Volunteers and collaborated with the Botswana Ministry of Education to acclimate them to the Botswana educational system and policies. Florentia then returned to the U.S. to further her studies. Florentia served in various leadership roles as a mock headmistress for training U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers, STEM Curriculum Developer, STEM Coordinator, STEM Professional Development Facilitator, Science Department Chair, Science Fair Coordinator, School Planning and Management Team member and mentored teachers at various Prince George’s County elementary and middle schools. Florentia was most recently one of twenty-seven Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows for the 2013-2014 academic school year. She served her fellowship at the National Science Foundation in the Computer and Information Systems and Engineering Directorate. She is a 2013-2014 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching for the District of Columbia (PAEMST). Florentia served as a NASA Master Teacher for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission that launched on February 27, 2014 and this satellite is currently orbiting our Earth. Florentia was one of fifty in-service teachers selected as a NASA Endeavor Fellow in 2011-2013 to pursue certification in STEM Leadership. In this position as a developing STEM Leader, she conducted professional development workshops for DC metro area teachers to enhance their ability to develop and execute STEM focused lessons. Florentia earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bennett College, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Science Education) from Loyola University. Florentia earned a STEM Leadership Certificate with NASA and Columbia Teachers College and is currently pursuing her PhD. at Texas Tech University in Global Science Education. Florentia proudly serves as a Master Educator for Elementary and Secondary Science, Math, STEM, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) for the District of Columbia Public Schools.
