Biography
The Center for Learning with Nature was founded by its present director Mr. Sam Stier in 2013. Mr. Stier is an instructional designer, teacher trainer, and public speaker on the role of Nature in contemporary technological innovation and K-12 education. Mr. Stier frequently leads teacher trainings for primary, secondary, and post-secondary educators all over the world, biomimicry workshops for design professionals, and is a sought-after public speaker. During his six year tenure directing the education program at Janine Benyus’s Biomimicry Institute, Mr. Stier helped dozens of formal and informal educational institutions, educators, and communicators integrate Nature-inspired innovation into their classrooms, exhibits, programs, and media communications, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, San Diego Zoo, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Montreal Biosphere, National Geographic, and United Nations Environment Programme. Mr. Stier has also trained professional biologists, designers, engineers, and architects in biomimicry design methodology all over the world. In addition, Mr. Stier has served as a biomimicry consultant to various companies striving for greater success in business, innovation, and sustainability. Previous to his work in biomimicry, Mr. Stier served as an environmental consultant for the World Bank, Nature Conservancy, WWF, and others. Mr. Stier’s scientific research has been published in scientific journals, his curricula has been published in science teachers’ journals, he has published a book with Chelsea House on the Philippines for young readers, and contributed to a book on biomimicry with Candlewick Press for children. Mr. Stier was a National Science Foundation Fellow in Curricula Development, holds an M.S. from the School of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana, and a B.A. in Communications from Brown University. He was appointed to the Next Generation Science Standards Task Force by the Office of Planning and Instruction, Department of Education, for the State of Montana in 2012. In addition to directing the Center for Learning with Nature, Mr. Stier is a faculty member at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he teaches Science and Sustainable Design.
