Engineering and Animals: EngineerGirl Essay Contest

Looking for an exciting opportunity for your students that will get them excited about engineering?  The 2017 EngineerGirl Essay Contest is open to students, both boys and girls, in grades 3-12. This year students are asked to describe how engineering can improve life for vulnerable and endangered animals.  You can even use this Teach Engineering lesson on Extinction Prevention via Engineering and this one on Engineering and Animals to introduce the topic.

The EngineerGirl website is one of the most popular resources on the Internet for kid-friendly information about engineers and engineering careers, and the annual essay contest gets students all around the country thinking and writing about the role of engineering in our society.  The contest deadline is February 1st, 2017 and students can win cash prizes of up to $500.

Be sure to visit the website for the full rules and regulations, and download the PDF Flyer to share with parents, students, and other interested teachers.

A few comments from students who participated in the 2016 EngineerGirl Contest:

“I wish I knew about this website sooner! I thought I knew everything there was to know about engineering, but I learned a lot more from this website.”

“I think that this website is absolutely amazing and I really enjoyed researching my topic for the contest!”

“I thought engineering was just about art but after doing my essay I found out that engineering is technology that we use throughout everyday of our lives.”

This is a fun contest and some of the essays in previous years were truly delightful. I hope people will spread the word about the EngineerGirl essay contest.
