Global Grand Challenges Summit Highlights Inspirational Side of Engineering

PostedThursday, June 8, 2017 at 2:34 PM

Why would someone want to study engineering? For some, the realization that they can improve quality of life through engineering is a big motivating factor. On July 18-20, 2017, the 3rd Global Grand Challenges Summit will be held in Washington, DC. , organized by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The goal of the 2017 Summit is to inspire the next generation of engineers, policymakers, and the public to creatively address some of the most pressing issues and promising innovations of our time embodied by the NAE’s Grand Challenges for Engineering—including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, improved health care, and climate change.

Things of interest to the K-12 community at the summit include the student day competition on July 19, where young engineers look for ways to change the world through engineering and business. On July 20, there will  be a panel on education and public engagement, which will consider K-12 engineering education and university engineering education, as well as how to engage the public in supporting and working with engineering educators.
