A presentation by Al Byers: an overview of the online learning community and e-PD portal as well as the research and findings that document impact, growth and efficacy.

In April of 2008 the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) formally launched its national portal for e-professional development called the NSTA Learning Center. With over 126,000 educators consuming over 1,104,000 digital learning resources across their personal libraries this model is showing impactful reach and sustained scalability. Rich learner-content interaction includes moderated district and self-directed learning, a blend of synchronous and asynchronous delivery modes, trained online advisors, and diverse media to accommodate varied learning preferences. Learning opportunities such as on-demand learning objects with interactive simulations with certificate opportunities, engaging web seminars and their related archives and podcasts, and thousands of e-journals and e-chapters, leverage a rich online learning community that recognizes and encourages the aggregation, annotation, sharing of personalized collections with colleagues through a system of badges to recognize online engagement and learning.

This presentation also includes strategies we employ to help build and sustain vibrant online communities and blended PD experiences will be discussed and participants will gain insight into how NSTA helps enhance our STEM professional learning community.
