At Limbitless Solutions, our belief in inclusivity does not stop with the limb difference community. In fact, a core part of our mission is to make the world a more inclusive place in every aspect of our society, including women in the workplace.
Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in 1951, Engineering Week is “dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of an interest in engineering and technology careers.” EWeek takes place from February 17th to February 23rd each year and February 21st is “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.”
At Limbitless Solutions, our belief in inclusivity does not stop with the limb difference community. In fact, a core part of our mission is to make the world a more inclusive place in every aspect of our society, including women in the workplace. That is why “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” is so important to our team, especially our five female engineering interns.
“Great innovation requires building on a diverse set of perspectives and ideas,” Limbitless Solutions president and co-founder Albert Manero said. “We hope that our incredible women engineers’ stories can inspire girls to explore how engineering can be so powerful for our communities.”
According to the Society of Women Engineers, 30% of women who have started a career in engineering have left the profession due to organizational climate.
In 2017, the United States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health conducted a research study to find which areas of organizational climate are causing women in engineering to leave the industry. Their results found that “comfort” was the main factor influencing why women are leaving the engineering industry.

Our priority is ensuring that all members of our team are treated with equality, and that we create an environment where the women and men feel comfortable exploring big ideas.Through cross-collaboration and project-based learning, we want to support the women on our team in making a significant impact, as well as a forum to contribute all ideas that they may have. When a female on our team has an idea, we have created an environment that allows them to feel comfortable enough to express it.
“One of the features at Limbitless that I absolutely love is the environment. Everyone is encouraging and you can have meaningful conversations about your work without feeling intimidated,” freshman mechanical engineering major Basma Heda said. “Specifically with the arc reactor project I worked on, the team gave incredible feedback during the process, and listened to every crazy idea that I came up with. I've always been an outspoken person, especially when it comes to my work, and Limbitless allows me to continue to express my own ideas without hesitation.”
With the numbers of women interested in engineering increasing, our hope is the number of them actually staying in the field will start to increase as well. Our team wants young girls to know that engineering can be from the heart. At Limbitless, we want to show women and young girls who are considering a career in engineering how we defy the current definition and how they can use engineering in non-traditional ways. Engineering does not have to be all science and numbers. It can be fun and expressive too, just like how we make it at Limbitless Solutions with our 3D-printed personalized bionics.
“As a kid, I always enjoyed assembling and fixing toys more than actually playing with them, which led me to engineering in high school and college,” senior mechanical engineering intern Brooke Mansfield said. “Over the last three years, Limbitless has been a place for me to experience real engineering beyond what I'm studying and learn real skills from the people I work with.”
Promoting STEAM education is an essential part of our mission at Limbitless Solutions. Not only do we strive to promote STEAM education in our community, but right here inside our lab as well. We want to help prepare the students that work in our lab for the careers that occupy our industry and for the ones that that we do not even know exist yet. In the ever changing STEAM field, we see new developments almost every day and we are confident that our students can be the ones to actively participate in these changes. Each semester Limbitless works side by side with new engineering students is a chance for our team to make an impact on the women who we believe will one day change the world.
