Here is one way to test your tower structures you create in your engineering classes.
Our friends at UCSD Structural Engineering Department use a method for testing load on Cori tower structures that we wanted to share with all our teachers. You will need a luggage scale device that can be looped and hooked onto a Cori tower structure like below.
Here are the steps to testing load on your Cori Tower Structures:
Step 0: Measure tower weight and height
Step 1: Secure the tower base
Step 2: Loop and hook the luggage scale
Step 3: Turn on the luggage scale
Step 4: Pull the luggage scale horizontally to apply lateral force
Step 5: Record results
Step 6: Redesign
We would love to hear what you do in your classroom? For more detailed information on this process, here is the UCSD COSMOS website link.
