I appreciate the back story to Lisa Rickey’s blog about how she is introducing engineering to families in her community. The blog will be very helpful to anyone considering hosting a Family Engineering experience for the first time or looking to improve their efforts if they are already doing family nights. Lisa shares resources including curriculum like Family Engineering, evaluation, and support materials. Perhaps, most valuable is Lisa’s candid reflections on the process. She embodies the engineer design process as she reflected on how she previously involved families, looked to research for insights, designed new ways to work with families, reflected on outcomes, and plans new approaches going forward. Here’s what most resonated with me from Lisa’s blog: “I need to bring more voices to the table in the planning. I also need to do a better job of intentionally reaching out to underrepresented families in the STEM fields and continue to listen and grow from others.” What an inspiring role model! Lisa moves out of her comfort zone, looks to truly engage families, and shares her lessons learned.
