Al Byers is Associate Executive of Services for the National Science Teachers Association and has executive oversight of over 30+ full time employees and an annual budget of $16M per year. He leads an executive staff that manages NSTA’s national conferences, e-learning, national competitions, and professional learning academies. He collaborates with government agencies, state and local education departments, universities, and foundations to develop high impact learning opportunities. He directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of large-scale blended learning that are consumed by over 170,000 educators online. He holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech, as well as a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction for Science Education from the same institution. Dr. Byers is an accomplished author with publications in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters, one in review by Harvard Press: Professional Development and Teacher Learning in the Digital Age: Models related to STEM Education. He serves on two Primary Technical Working Groups for the US Department of Education: Educational Technology Online Communities of Practice and the CS 10K Community of Practice, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Prior to his tenure at NSTA, he served as an Aerospace Education Specialist for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and early in his education career, he was a sixth and eighth grade physical science educator in Chesterfield, Virginia.
