In the Airfoil Design activity learners build and shape an airfoil using limited resources and then test it in a wind tunnel to determine if lift is created.

Airfoil Design: How does an airfoil's shape affect lift?

Objective: Understand the relationship between weight, balance, and stability

Scenario and Task: You are an aeronautical engineer. Your task is to create an airfoil and test it in a wind tunnel. Your goal is to generate as much lift as possible.

AeroEducate 9-12 Activities are developed for learners to investigate topics such as aerodynamics, the four forces of flight, composite wings, and flight stability. Designed in a 5-E lesson format, each activity begins with an essential question, incorporates a career component through a real-world scenario, and introduces age-appropriate vocabularyBackground information for the facilitator is included. Posters that illustrate key concepts associated with the lesson can be printed or viewed electronically. Separate student directions, educator setups, and templates are included as needed.

These activities could be used as team-building and collaborative engineering experiences for transitional bridge programs from high school to college.  They are also excellent capstone engineering projects.
