Peter McLaren is currently a consultant, working with states and districts in the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. In his previous work Mr. McLaren served in a number of roles in science education policy including Director of the State and District Support for Science at Achieve, Science, and Technology Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education and President of the Council of State Science Supervisors (CSSS) serving as President from July, 2010 until April, 2013.  Mr. McLaren also served as a member of the national writing committee for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  In addition to the NAE LinkEngineering committee, he served as a member of the National Academies’ Committee for Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards.  Under his leadership, CSSS has implemented a series of Building Capacity in State Science Education (BCSSE) conferences, a national project designed to empower foundational knowledge, motivation, partnerships, and collaborations at the state level necessary to ensure that a new vision for science learning and teaching, with fidelity to the National Research Council’s report (2012) A Framework for K-12 Science Education and to support states build capacity towards the adoption and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards .  Since 2011 CSSS has conducted five national BCSSE meetings for state science supervisors and their state implementation teams.
