Hive Learning Networks PostedOctober 21, 2017 UpdatedOctober 21, 2017 Posted bySneha Tharayil https://hivelearningnetworks.org/ I think the video on the "About" page gives a better description of what this organization is about than I can attempt here. Nevertheless, in essence, I think the premise is a real-life social learning network for youth that brings together people from all different varying interests and skills to form a learning community outside of traditional school settings. I believe these Hive Learning Networks and Communities organize these community events where children and families can come together and participate/form a professional learning community, often STEM or STEM oriented. Curiosity Machine PostedOctober 21, 2017 UpdatedOctober 21, 2017 Posted bySneha Tharayil https://www.curiositymachine.org/ This is another great resource and repository of engineering lessons for mostly elementary-aged children. It is a product of Iridescent Learning and is Boeing sponsored/affiliated and NSF funded, and has partnerships with a slew of other reputable organizations. I believe the site even has mentorship resources--i.e. can connect educators to mentors in the STEM fields. Disclaimer: I've only cursorily browsed around this website so far, but from what I've seen of it, it looks like a solid resource! Read More Average Ratings 0 Reviews0 Q&A;0
2 Comments The Ultimate Shoe: Shoe Friction Design Project PostedApril 21, 2015 UpdatedSeptember 27, 2017 Posted bySneha Tharayil I had developed this project for my 8th grade students during our "Motion and Forces" physical science unit in order to give them an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of friction in a project-based type assessment. At the time, the school at which I was teaching had not yet adopted NGSS as it was just beginning to be rolled out at the time. Hence, this project is primarily aligned with the old version of the California State Science Standards. However, I believe this project has potential to be further developed into a truly meaningful design-based project. Hence, I am relying and would therefore LOVE any ideas/feedback from the LinkEngineering community to help me improve this lesson/project. In particular, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions anyone may have as to what a fair-test could be for students to use to test out their designs and collect data. Read More Q&A;0

Comment Sneha Tharayil , University of Texas at Austin commented on a question answer "Question Answer submitted by: Johannes Strobel" Posted Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 3:07 PM Dr. Strobel, I apologize my response is several months late (I've had a very busy summer!). Thank you so much for your answer. I think you bring up some interesting points about how we conceive what empathy is and what that might look like in engineering design. I particularly like the idea of involving the end-user in the design process. I am interested to see how incorporating that idea would look like in the K-12 setting; seems like a great way to get students' communities involved in their learning and vice versa! Also thank you especially for all the resources/references! I look forward to reading those! They all sound so interesting! Read Less
